As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change.

O son of Kunté, the nonpermanent appearance of happiness and distress, and their disappearance in due course, are like the appearance and disappearance of winter and summer seasons. They arise from sense perception, O scion of Bharata, and one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed.

For the soul there is neither birth nor death at any time. He has not come into being, does not come into being, and will not come into being. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain.

The devotees of the Lord are released from all kinds of sins because they eat food which is offered first for sacrifice. Others, who prepare food for personal sense enjoyment, verily eat only sin.

The spirit soul bewildered by the influence of false ego thinks himself the doer of activities that are in actuality carried out by the three modes of material nature.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: It is lust only, Arjuna, which is born of contact with the material mode of passion and later transformed into wrath, and which is the all-devouring sinful enemy of this world.
evamthus; paramparäby disciplic succession; präptamreceived; imamthis science; räja-åñayaùthe saintly kings; viduùunderstood; saùthat knowledge; kälenain the course of time; ihain this world; mahatägreat; yogaùthe science of ones relationship with the Supreme; nañöaùscattered; parantapaO Arjuna, subduer of the enemies.
This supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciplic succession, and the saintly kings understood it in that way. But in course of time the succession was broken, and therefore the science as it is appears to be lost.
pariträëäyafor the deliverance; sädhünämof the devotees; vinäçäyafor the annihilation; caand; duñkåtämof the miscreants; dharmaprinciples of religion; saàsthäpana-arthäyato reestablish; sambhavämiI do appear; yugemillennium; yugeafter millennium.
To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I Myself appear, millennium after millennium.
janma karma ca me
janmabirth; karmawork; caalso; meof Mine; divyamtranscendental; evamlike this; yaùanyone who; vettiknows; tattvataùin reality; tyaktväleaving aside; dehamthis body; punaùagain; janmabirth; nanever; etidoes attain; mämunto Me; etidoes attain; saùhe; arjunaO Arjuna.
One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna.
tatthat knowledge of different sacrifices; viddhitry to understand; praëipätenaby approaching a spiritual master; paripraçnenaby submissive inquiries; sevayäby the rendering of service; upadekñyantithey will initiate; teyou; jïänaminto knowledge; jïäninaùthe self-realized; tattvaof the truth; darçinaùseers.
Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized souls can impart knowledge unto you because they have seen the truth.

A person in full consciousness of Me, knowing Me to be the ultimate beneficiary of all sacrifices and austerities, the Supreme Lord of all planets and demigods, and the benefactor and well-wisher of all living entities, attains peace from the pangs of material miseries.
yoginämof yogés; apialso; sarveñämall types of; mat-gatenaabiding in Me, always thinking of Me; antaù-ätmanäwithin himself; çraddhä-vänin full faith; bhajaterenders transcendental loving service; yaùone who; mämto Me (the Supreme Lord); saùhe; meby Me; yukta-tamaùthe greatest yogé; mataùis considered.
And of all yogés, the one with great faith who always abides in Me, thinks of Me within himself, and renders transcendental loving service to Mehe is the most intimately united with Me in yoga and is the highest of all. That is My opinion.
Knowledge of the Absolute
manuñyäëämof men; sahasreñuout of many thousands; kaçcitsomeone; yatatiendeavors; siddhayefor perfection; yatatämof those so endeavoring; apiindeed; siddhänämof those who have achieved perfection; kaçcitsomeone; mämMe; vettidoes know; tattvataùin fact.
Out of many thousands among men, one may endeavor for perfection, and of those who have achieved perfection, hardly one knows Me in truth.
daivé hy eñä
daivétranscendental; hicertainly; eñäthis; guëa-mayéconsisting of the three modes of material nature; mamaMy; mäyäenergy; duratyayävery difficult to overcome; mämunto Me; evacertainly; yethose who; prapadyantesurrender; mäyäm etämthis illusory energy; tarantiovercome; tethey.
This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it.
Attaining the Supreme
anta-käle ca mäm
anta-käleat the end of life; caalso; mämMe; evacertainly; smaranremembering; muktväquitting; kalevaramthe body; yaùhe who; prayätigoes; saùhe; mat-bhävamMy nature; yätiachieves; nanot; astithere is; atrahere; saàçayaùdoubt.
And whoever, at the end of his life, quits his body, remembering Me alone, at once attains My nature. Of this there is no doubt.
The Most Confidential Knowledge
räja-vidyäthe king of education; räja-guhyamthe king of confidential knowledge; pavitramthe purest; idamthis; uttamamtranscendental; pratyakñaby direct experience; avagamamunderstood; dharmyamthe principle of religion; su-sukhamvery happy; kartumto execute; avyayameverlasting.
This knowledge is the king of education, the most secret of all secrets. It is the purest knowledge, and because it gives direct perception of the self by realization, it is the perfection of religion. It is everlasting, and it is joyfully performed.
açraddadhänäùthose who are faithless; puruñäùsuch persons; dharmasyatoward the process of religion; asyathis; parantapaO killer of the enemies; apräpyawithout obtaining; mämMe; nivartantecome back; måtyuof death; saàsärain material existence; vartmanion the path.
Those who are not faithful in this devotional service cannot attain Me, O conqueror of enemies. Therefore they return to the path of birth and death in this material world.
satatamalways; kértayantaùchanting; mämabout Me; yatantaùfully endeavoring; caalso; dåòha-vratäùwith determination; namasyantaùoffering obeisances; caand; mämMe; bhaktyäin devotion; nitya-yuktäùperpetually engaged; upäsateworship.
Always chanting My glories, endeavoring with great determination, bowing down before Me, these great souls perpetually worship Me with devotion.
patrama leaf; puñpama flower; phalama fruit; toyamwater; yaùwhoever; meunto Me; bhaktyäwith devotion; prayacchatioffers; tatthat; ahamI; bhakti-upahåtamoffered in devotion; açnämiaccept; prayata-ätmanaùfrom one in pure consciousness.
If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it.
yat karoñi yad
yatwhatever; karoñiyou do; yatwhatever; açnäsiyou eat; yatwhatever; juhoñiyou offer; dadäsiyou give away; yatwhatever; yatwhatever; tapasyasiausterities you perform; kaunteyaO son of Kunté; tatthat; kuruñvado; matunto Me; arpaëamas an offering.
Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer or give away, and whatever austerities you performdo that, O son of Kunté, as an offering to Me.
The Opulence of the Absolute
ahamI; sarvasyaof all; prabhavaùthe source of generation; mattaùfrom Me; sarvameverything; pravartateemanates; itithus; matväknowing; bhajantebecome devoted; mämunto Me; budhäùthe learned; bhäva-samanvitäùwith great attention.
I am the source of all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from Me. The wise who perfectly know this engage in My devotional service and worship Me with all their hearts.
mat-cittäùtheir minds fully engaged in Me; mat-gata-präëäùtheir lives devoted to Me; bodhayantaùpreaching; parasparamamong themselves; kathayantaùtalking; caalso; mämabout Me; nityamperpetually; tuñyantibecome pleased; caalso; ramantienjoy transcendental bliss; caalso.
The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully devoted to My service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss from always enlightening one another and conversing about Me.

To those who are constantly devoted to serving Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me.
teñämfor them; evacertainly; anukampä-arthamto show special mercy; ahamI; ajïäna-jamdue to ignorance; tamaùdarkness; näçayämidispel; ätma-bhävawithin their hearts; sthaùsituated; jïänaof knowledge; dépenawith the lamp; bhäsvatäglowing.
To show them special mercy, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy with the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance.
yad yad vibhütimat
yat yatwhatever; vibhütiopulences; mathaving; sattvamexistence; çré-matbeautiful; ürjitamglorious; evacertainly; väor; tat tatall those; evacertainly; avagacchamust know; tvamyou; mamaMy; tejaùof the splendor; aàçaa part; sambhavamborn of.
Know that all opulent, beautiful and glorious creations spring from but a spark of My splendor.
The Universal Form
mat-karma-kåtengaged in doing My work; mat-paramaùconsidering Me the Supreme; mat-bhaktaùengaged in My devotional service; saìga-varjitaùfreed from the contamination of fruitive activities and mental speculation; nirvairaùwithout an enemy; sarva-bhüteñuamong all living entities; yaùone who; saùhe; mämunto Me; eticomes; päëòavaO son of Päëòu.
My dear Arjuna, he who engages in My pure devotional service, free from the contaminations of fruitive activities and mental speculation, he who works for Me, who makes Me the supreme goal of his life, and who is friendly to every living beinghe certainly comes to Me.
Nature, the Enjoyer, and Consciousness
puruñaùthe living entity; prakåti-sthaùbeing situated in the material energy; hicertainly; bhuìkteenjoys; prakåti-jänproduced by the material nature; guëänthe modes of nature; käraëamthe cause; guëa-saìgaùthe association with the modes of nature; asyaof the living entity; sat-asatin good and bad; yonispecies of life; janmasuin births.
The living entity in material nature thus follows the ways of life, enjoying the three modes of nature. This is due to his association with that material nature. Thus he meets with good and evil among various species.
The Three Modes Of Material Nature
sarva-yoniñuin all species of life; kaunteyaO son of Kunté; mürtayaùforms; sambhavantithey appear; yäùwhich; täsämof all of them; brahmathe supreme; mahat yoniùsource of birth in the material substance; ahamI; béja-pradaùthe seed-giving; pitäfather.
It should be understood that all species of life, O son of Kunté, are made possible by birth in this material nature, and that I am the seed-giving father.
The Yoga of the Supreme Person
sarvasyaof all living beings; caand; ahamI; hådiin the heart; sanniviñöaùsituated; mattaùfrom Me; småtiùremembrance; jïänamknowledge; apohanamforgetfulness; caand; vedaiùby the Vedas; caalso; sarvaiùall; ahamI am; evacertainly; vedyaùknowable; vedänta-kåtthe compiler of the Vedänta; veda-vitthe knower of the Vedas; evacertainly; caand; ahamI.
I am seated in everyones heart, and from Me come remembrance, knowledge and forgetfulness. By all the Vedas, I am to be known. Indeed, I am the compiler of Vedänta, and I am the knower of the Vedas.
The Divine And Demoniac Natures
yaùanyone who; çästra-vidhimthe regulations of the scriptures; utsåjyagiving up; vartateremains; käma-kärataùacting whimsically in lust; nanever; saùhe; siddhimperfection; aväpnotiachieves; nanever; sukhamhappiness; nanever; parämthe supreme; gatimperfectional stage.
He who discards scriptural injunctions and acts according to his own whims attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme destination.
ConclusionThe Perfection of Renunciation
brahma-bhütaùbeing one with the Absolute; prasanna-ätmäfully joyful; nanever; çocatilaments; nanever; käìkñatidesires; samaùequally disposed; sarveñuto all; bhüteñuliving entities; mat-bhaktimMy devotional service; labhategains; parämtranscendental.
One who is thus transcendentally situated at once realizes the Supreme Brahman and becomes fully joyful. He never laments or desires to have anything. He is equally disposed toward every living entity. In that state he attains pure devotional service unto Me.
bhaktyäby pure devotional service; mämMe; abhijänätione can know; yävänas much as; yaù ca asmias I am; tattvataùin truth; tataùthereafter; mämMe; tattvataùin truth; jïätväknowing; viçatehe enters; tat-anantaramthereafter.
One can understand Me as I am, as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, only by devotional service. And when one is in full consciousness of Me by such devotion, he can enter into the kingdom of God.
cetasäby intelligence; sarva-karmäëiall kinds of activities; mayiunto Me; sannyasyagiving up; mat-paraùunder My protection; buddhi-yogamdevotional activities; upäçrityataking shelter of; mat-cittaùin consciousness of Me; satatamtwenty-four hours a day; bhavajust become.
In all activities just depend upon Me and work always under My protection. In such devotional service, be fully conscious of Me.
éçvaraùthe Supreme Lord; sarva-bhütänämof all living entities; håt-deçein the location of the heart; arjunaO Arjuna; tiñöhatiresides; bhrämayancausing to travel; sarva-bhütäniall living entities; yantraon a machine; ärüòhanibeing placed; mäyayäunder the spell of material energy.
The Supreme Lord is situated in everyones heart, O Arjuna, and is directing the wanderings of all living entities, who are seated as on a machine, made of the material energy.
mat-manäùthinking of Me; bhavajust become; mat-bhaktaùMy devotee; mat-yäjéMy worshiper; mämunto Me; namaskuruoffer your obeisances; mämunto Me; evacertainly; eñyasiyou will come; satyamtruly; teto you; pratijäneI promise; priyaùdear; asiyou are; meto Me.
Always think of Me, become My devotee, worship Me and offer your homage unto Me. Thus you will come to Me without fail. I promise you this because you are My very dear friend.
sarva-dharmänall varieties of religion; parityajyaabandoning; mämunto Me; ekamonly; çaraëamfor surrender; vrajago; ahamI; tvämyou; sarvaall; päpebhyaùfrom sinful reactions; mokñayiñyämiwill deliver; mädo not; çucaùworry.
Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.
